Eliminate piece hardening !

Do you wish to avoid piece hardening of your leaf springs or do you use stainless steel SS 2331/301/1.4310 even though there are no requirements in terms of corrosion? If so, our high strength PT-Strip, which has very good formability, is an optimal option that gives you technical and cost control benefits.

Despite a tensile strength up to about 1400 MPa, the material has a good formability.

Why PT-Strip

    • High strength
    • Very good formability
    • No piece hardening
    • Reduced scrap
    • Low spread of spring back
    • Closer tolerances for the finished spring compared with a piece hardened spring
    • Lower total cost

PT-strip is a high strength material with very good formability delivered in strengths up to around 1500 MPa and primarily used for details with feather characteristics. With PT-strip correctly used in the right applications you achieve advantages in terms of both performance and cost. E.g. you can avoid piece hardening of your details and all its drawbacks such as deformation, sorting, straightening, cassations and other additional costs due to piece hardening. Bending radiuses you never thought possible for a hardened material with this strength, can be formed with the PT-strip.

PT stands for Pre Tempered and means in practice that the material has been provided with a bainitic structure through a special hardening method. The bainitic structure gives the material a good formability and high strength at the same time. A martensitic hardened material has a high strength, but a very limited formability and has very limited forming capabilities. The alternative to using PT-Strip is piece hardening of the parts after stamping and bending/forming with all its disadvantages and problems.

The material is mainly used for springs, but can actually be used for many different parts where high strength is required. Thanks to a very good formability the material can even be deep drawn, see the image on the right.

Below you find indications of mechanical properties for the PT-strips, for information purpose only. More accurate data will be presented on request. The curve for C75S +QT shows the very limited formability for a martensite hardened C75S (SS1778). We can help you choose the optimal strength level suitable for your product and manufacturing process.
